EU - Chapter 11 Vocabulary Flashcards
Apparent Retrograde Motion
The apparent backward motion of a planet’s path relative to the background of the night sky (Pg. 388)
Big Bang Theory
The theory that State the universe formed when an infinitely dense point suddenly and rapidly expanded in a single moment; All the matter and energy that exists today was created during the early minutes of that hot, rapid expansion (Pg. 380)
Electromagnetic Radiation
The wave form of light energy that travels in waves of varying lengths; visible light is one form of electromagnetic radiation (Pg. 382)
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The full range of electromagnetic radiation, organized by wavelength from very long to very short; examples include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, and X rays (Pg. 382)
Geocentric Models
A model of the universe or solar system that places Earth at the center (Pg. 387)
Heliocentric Models
A model of the solar system that places the Sun at the center of the solar system; Earth and other objects in the solar system revolve around the sun (Pg. 388)
Orbital Radius
A planet’s distance from the Sun (Pg. 389)
Red-shifted
The increase of a light’s wavelength, moving it toward the red end of the visible spectrum (Pg. 384)
Spectral Lines
A series of dark lines that appears across a light spectrum and indicates the chemical elements that make up the material emitting light; the spectral lines across a star’s light spectrum indicate that chemical composition of the star (Pg. 383)
Spectral Shifting
The change in position of spectral lines to the left or the right of where they normally lie in the spectrum of a light source that is not moving (Pg. 384)
Spectroscope
A device that splits a light sample into is component colours, or spectrum (Pg. 379)
Spectrum
The separation of radiation, such as light, into different wavelengths (Pg. 378)
