What is the EU?
The European Union is a political + economic union of 28 states, which arose out of the establishment of the European Coal + Steel Community established by 60 nations in 1950.
Aims of the EU:
- to promote peace
- to establish economic integration
- to establish an economic + monetary union
- to enlarge/expand
- to create social policy
- to establish political union

On 23 June 2016, the British public voted to leave the EU in a referendum by a margin on 52%-48%, meaning that the UK will become the first member state to leave the EU.
What did the Single European Act of 1985 do?
Established ‘four freedoms’: free movement of goods, services, people + capital.
What did the 1995 Schengen Agreemtn do?
Allowed free moment of EU citizens to live + work in member states.
What did the Lisbon Treaty 2009 do?
Established creation of a permanent European Council president
Allowed for legislative proposals to be established with 55% member state support
What did the Maastricht Treaty 1991 do?
Aimed to establish guaranteed rights fro workers, entitlements to parental leave + paid holidays.
