Etomidate Flashcards
What is the onset and offset time with Etomidate?
Onset time: 30 seconds Offset time: 3-7 minutes
How is Etomidate organised?
Metabolism: Etomidate is an ester and undergoes ester hydrolysis in both plasma and the liver.
How does Etomidate effect different body systems?
CNS: Hypnosis.
CVS: Very little effect on heart rate (HR), CO and systemic vascular resistance (SVR).
RS: Minimal and transient dose-dependent respiratory depression.
What are some of the complication/contraindications to using Etomidate?
Adrenal suppression particularly when used in infusions.
Nausea and vomiting, particularly when compared to propofol.
Hypersensitivity reactions: 1 in 75000
Should be avoided in porphyria
What chemical class does etomidate belong to and what physicochemical properties does it have?
It is a carboxylated imidazole derivative, both lipid-soluble and water-soluble, i.e. much more water-soluble than propofol. About 70% is bound to plasma proteins.
What is the dose of etomidate for induction of anaesthesia?
0.25-0.3 mg/kg
What is in an ampoule of etomidate?
An aqueous solution of etomidate, pH 8.1, stabilized in 35% propylene glycol giving a concentration of 2 mg/ml, i.e. 0.2% etomidate.
Draw the chemical structure of etomidate?
What is the difference between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics?
Pharmacokinetics: what the body does to the drug.
Pharmacodynamics: what the drug does to the body
