What is the difference between a value and a standard?
A value = moral principle, sense of character or spirit, something to aspire to/aim for
A standard = minimum expectation, a measure by which you judge performance/behaviour
What is the definition of discipline?
Can be imposed or innate i.e. self discipline.
Imposed discipline = fair application of punishment/enforcement of a set of rules
Self discipline = self control to do/achieve something in spite of difficult circumstances
What are the core values of the Army?
CDRILS
Courage Discipline Respect for others Integrity Loyalty Selfless commitment
Why does the army have values and standards?
They ensure operational effectiveness. They are more than just a code of conduct. They pose a functional role. Individual investment and development of these belies and investment in the “team” i.e. the army as a whole and as such the team mission. They ensure military efficiency and effectiveness in doing so. Fostering them in soldiers is therefore essential.
As an officer in the British Army how would you develop the Values and Standards in lower ranking troops?
- Lead by example
- Develop morale
- Develop trust in me (put their interests ahead of my own)
- Develop trust in each other
With consideration to values and standards how would you define misconduct?
Any situation in which the actions of an individual have adversely affected or are likely to impact the efficiency and operational integrity of the army.
What is the Army Ethos?
= Spirit that inspires soldiers to fight.
Consists of:
Commitment
Self sacrifice
Mutual trust
This is essential for the maintenance of morale
Define selfless commitment.
Putting the team and mission before yourself.
Define courage.
Physical and moral concept. Doing what is right as well doing what scares you.
Define integrity.
Being honest.
Doing the right thing - not always the easy thing.
