Animism
The belief that gods are everywhere
Assimilation
Blending/fusing of minority groups into the dominant society
Beautification
To make beautiful
Clan
A group of people, usually with common ancestors
Endogamy vs. Exogamy
Endogamy: marriage within one’s own group
Exogamy: Someone who marries outside his or her own group
Egocentric vs. Geocentric
Based upon yourself vs. Based on the earth
Lineage: Matrilineal, Patrilinieal, and Dual Descent
Lineage: kinship/descent group
Matrilineal: descent through the female line
Patrilineal: descent through the male line
Dual Descent:
Monogamy/Polygamy
Suffix, -gamy.
-gamy=marriage
Monogamy: marriage with one partner
Polygamy: marriage w/ more than one partner
Nationalism
ideology that involves a strong identification of a group/nation
Pastoralism
branch of agriculture concerned with raising livestock
Nomadic/semi-nomadic
Nomad: a group/person without a fixed habitation
Semi-nomadic: a group/person with a semi-fixed habitation. They might spend most of the year in one place but might move around the other months.
Social Class
A broad group in society with common economic, cultural, or political status
Social Mobility
movement of individuals or groups in social position over time
Status
position of an individual in relation to others, especially in regard to social standing
Subsistence Agriculture
self sufficiency farming, only growing the bare minimum for survival
