Ethnicity & Crime Flashcards
Left realism- relative deprivation
Young black males have much higher levels of unemployment. In comparison with their peers from other ethnic groups, they are much less likely to be successful in the labour market (employment).
Left realism-Marginalisation
Ethnic groups are encouraged to pursue sucess, however this is blocked by schools, unemployment and racism. The result of this is feeling resentment and frustration, which can be expressed by violence.
Marxism, Castles & Kosak- Racism
Even though slavery is gone, but racist views are still used to justify low wages, and bad treatment of ethnic minorities. This can result in crime, as minority groups fight back.
Neo-Marxism: Paul Gilroy- The myth of black criminality.
Gilroy argued that black crime in the 1970s was a form of political resistance against a repressive, racist state, full of inequality and discriminanation. Criminal statistics are a manifistation of racial stereotypes being acted upon.
Neo-Marxism: Stuart Hall-Moral Panics, capatalism and crime
Moral panic created by the media over crime such as mugging in the 1970s. It was suggested that mugging by black people was in the rise, but figures showed a different picture. This moral panic was created as a distraction to divert focus on wider economic crisis.
