Ethnicity And Education - Internal Factors Flashcards
Labelling and teacher racism - black pupils and streaming
- Black pupils more likely to be ‘hopeless cases’ due to teacher stereotypes putting them in lower streams
- Foster (1990) teacher stereotypes of black pupils behaviour can also place them in lower streams than other pupils of the same ability + causing SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY OF UNDERACHIEVEMENT
Asian pupils
Wright (1992) - study of multi-ethnic primary schools found Asian pupils are also victims of teacher labelling
-> teachers hold ETHNO-CENTRIC VIEWS of British culture/English language being superior
-> means teachers would assume Asian pupils had poor English and left them out of class discussions, or used childish language to talk to them
-> Asian pupils were marginalised - feeling isolated when names/cultures were disapproved of and were ignored due to not being a ‘threat’ like black pupils
Pupil identities
Archer (2008): teachers dominant discourse was that ethnic minority pupils don’t fit the stereotypical ‘ideal pupil’
-> ideal pupil identity: passive, quiet, obedient
Ethno centric curriculum
- 1% of candidates for GCSE Eng lit in 2019 answered a question on a novel based on a novel by an author of colour
- 12% of secondary and 13% of primary teachers in survey reported that they had training on how to talk about race as part of their initial teacher training
