How do victim studies work and why is it beneficial?

A

Ran by the Crime Survey for England and Wales

Asks individuals to say what crimes they have been a victim of (usually in the past 12 months)

We can gain information about ethnicity of the criminal and also what type of crime was being committed.

Q

What are the limitations of victim surveys?

A
  • They rely on victims recall of events which may not always be truthful
(Phillips and Bowling point out that evidence suggest that white victims may over-identify black people as the offenders even when they are not sure.)
  • They only cover personal crimes which makes up about 5% of all crimes
  • They exclude ethnicity in white collar crime made by corporations and businesses.
