Which ethnic group is achieving the most?
Asian - Indian and Chinese
Which ethnic group is underachieving?
Afro-Caribbean, Bangladeshi and Pakistani
[CD] Bereiter and Engelmann
Black - less likely to use intellectual stimulation - required for education success. Restricted code.
[CD] Critique of Bereiter and Engelmann
Troyna and Williams - Many Indians do not speak English as their first language yet they still succeed
[CD] New Right
Afro-Caribbean hold fatalistic, “live for today” values so they don’t value education and aren’t encouraged to work hard for educational success
[CD] Scruton, New Right
Ethnic minorities fail to integrate into the mainstream British values therefore they fail in education
[CD] Critique of Scruton and New Right
Racist - assume e/m are inferior
[CD] Moynihan
Many black e/m families are brought up in matrifocal lone parent families which leads them into educational failure as they have a lack of male role model. Deprived of adequate care + mother struggles financially
[CD] Murray
Black e/m fail as a result of a lack of male role models and they see deprivation as a cycle which repeats itself from generation to generation
[CD] Critique of Murray
Ignore white nuclear families who are unable to socialise their children properly
[CD] Sewell - Asian e/m
Asian kids do better because they are brought up in supportive close knit families - “asian work ethic”, high value placed on education
[CD] Sewell - Black e/m
Black boys do not have a lack of male role model but receive tough love so they struggle to overcome emotional difficulties so instead they turn to music, gangs and violent youth subcultures.
This gives them anti school attitudes
[CD] Critique of Sewell
Gilborn - e/m fail due to institutional racism
[CD] Lumpton
Asian families hold similar values to the school policies + similar behaviour expectations
