How were Jewish communities treated?
They were like a community within a community. They followed their own laws and had their own courts. They were allowed to practice their faith and had their own synagogues. They still had to pay taxes and dues to the local ruler. Their dealings with Christians were limited to economic.
How did Jews regard the family unit?
It was pivitol. All were expected to marry and have children. Marriages were usually arranged and wives had a dowry and husbands gave a gift.
What was marrying age for Jews?
11 or 12
What was grounds for divorce for women?
Wife beating, which was also punished. Infertility, desertion, or serious incompatibility
Men could divorce without reason.
What did Jews think about periods and sex?
Not during, and not for seven days after. Ritual cleaning on eighth day.
How did Jewish child education diverge
At age six boys were taught the Torah and learned Hebrew, but girls learned housekeeping and religious laws surrounding food preparation and domestic rituals. They were also taught crafts and learned to read, write and do maths so they could make money.
What couldn’t Jewish women do Mediterranean Europe that they could do in France, Germany, and England?
They couldn’t sit with their husbands in the synagogue or say grace over meals.
Why was moneylending a precarious job for Jews?
Outbreaks of antisemitism and their protection by rulers made them vulnerable to demands from them for money, such as when Henry III ruined them financially.
What did Edward I in 1275 do to Jews?
Outlawed charging interest and made Jews live in towns and wear a badge
Where did Muslims live?
Spain and Portugal, mostly in the countryside
How did Muslims wives differ from other religions?
They had no freedom of movement, their husbands married multiple wives. If she became a widow, her kids were given to male kin and she was expected to remarry.
When and where did the slave trade develop?
Eastern Mediterranean in the 13th century
What ethnic groups made up most slaves?
Tartars, Bulgars, Cumans, and Turks.
What work did slaves do?
Men did hard labour, women worked in the house, often as wet-nurses and vulnerable to sexual exploitation
