What are ethics?
Ethics are a set of moral codes to ensure certain standards of behaviour from the researchers.
What are the BPS based around?
Respect, Competence, Responsibility, Integrity.
What is Confidentiality?
A legal right. Personal information must be protected. Participants should not be individually identifiable in any piece of research.
Explain Right to Withdraw?
At the beginning of the research process participants must be told that they can withdraw from the investigation at any point.
What is informed consent?
Where participants should be fully informed of the aims of the investigation and all other aspects of research that might influence the individual’s willingness to take part. Anyone under the age of 16 and the mentally impaired cannot consent to take part themselves, parents/legal guardians must consent for them.
informed consent - prior general consent
involves informing the participants of the basic details about the investigation and that deception occurs in a large number of psychological investigations.
informed consent - presumptive consent
involves a similar group of people to the actual participants being told all of the study details.
informed consent - retrospective consent
involves asking participants for their consent (during debriefing) having already taken part in the study.
Explain Protection from harm
Participants should be protected from physical and psychological harm. They should be in the same or better physical and psychological state as they were when they began the investigation.
What is deception?
Participants should not be intentionally lied to. Deception is only acceptable when the benefits outweigh the costs or there is no other alternative.
