Ethics In Sport Flashcards
Amateurism
Participation in sport for the love of it, receiving no financial gain; it is based on the concept of athleticism. (I.e physical endeavour with moral integrity)
Olympic oath
“In the name of all competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sport and honour of our teams.”
Sportsmanship
Conforming to the rules, spirit and etiquette of a sport. Eg. Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra refused to shake hands prior to the game, even though this forms part of the FA’s ‘Respect’ initiative for promotion fair play and sportsmanship.
Gamesmanship
Bending the rules and stretching them to their absolute limit without getting caught; using whatever dubious methods possible to achieve the desired result. Eg. NZ vs AUS, NZ need a 6 to win AUS captain bowls underarm so NZ can not win, blinding the rules to their limit!
Win ethic
“Win at all costs at attitude” outcome is all that matters. Eg. Managers fired if not successful and rule changes in basketball (always a winner).
Positive deviance
Behaviour which is outside the norms of society but with no intent to harm or break the rules. Eg. Running with an injury to do the best for your country (Paula Radcliffe)
Negative deviance
Behaviour that goes against the norms and has a detrimental effect on individuals and society in general. Eg. Taking PEDs and deliberately harming/fouling an opponent.
