Ethics in Social Sciences Flashcards
Neoliberal Capitalism:
Defence of individual liberty, private property, and the freedom of markets from external influence as much as possible.
Racial Capitalism:
The scholars who use the term agree that it refers to the mutual dependence of capitalism and racism. Walter Johnson writes that racial capitalism is “a sort of capitalism that relies upon the elaboration, reproduction, and exploitation of notions of racial difference.”
Neoliberalism on Culture:
Thirty years of neoliberalism, free-market forces and privatisation have taken their toll, as relentless pressure to achieve has become normative. If you’re reading this sceptically, I put this simple statement to you: meritocratic neoliberalism favours certain personality traits and penalises others.
Modern day slavery and consumption:
- We consume the products of slavery every day. All of us. Today’s globalised supply chains make it is almost impossible to avoid goods or services free of the fingerprints of slavery.
- Slavery involves any situation of exploitation that a person cannot refuse to leave, because of threats, violence, coercion, deception or abuse of power.
Gig economy:
Neoliberalism has pushed for the casualisation of the work force. It enables individuals to be treated unfairly at the price of flexibility.
E.g. poor pay, no health care or benefits, tax complications, and out of pocket compensation.
