What is consequentialism?

A

Assess the rightness or wrongness of action primarily on the outcomes.
Act-utilitarianism – the best action is that which maximises utility i.e. brings about the “greatest overall happiness of the greatest number”.
Classical act-utilitarianist – Jeremy Bentham (1748 – 1832)

A

Could be impractical in some circumstances, for example using unethical/illegal means to obtain evidence

Punishing innocent scapegoats (e.g. by suppressing evidence) may satisfy the public’s desire for justice

Does not focus on rights of individuals or duties of actions

Does not prohibit seemingly unethical actions, for example killing one person (to save many more)

A

Considers one’s duty to adhere to rules as most important with the consequences of the decision of lower importance - Immanuel Kant (1724-1804),Kantian Ethics
Aka. Adhering to laws, rules, codes of conduct and regulations is most important.
