Definition of Animal Ethics
Describing, defending and recommending concepts of right and wrong in relation to animals.
Five Freedoms
Freedom from hunger and thirst Freedom from discomfort Freedom from pain, injury and disease Freedom to express normal behaviours Freedom from fear and distress
Sentinence
The determination that animals have feelings
Ampthropomorphism
Subjecting of animals to human feelings. Is employed by public. Focused on differences from human environments such as space availability, early weaning and presence of excreta. Other issues include those which animals have no control such as transport and those which public have no control such as overseas handling and slaughter.
Assessment of Welfare
Group Level-what groups of animals are being assessed (e.g. farm, research) Expenses and handling for animals as well as the reliability
Group size-May assess individual animals and take an epidemiological approach by selecting a representative cross section
Outputs of animal-can determine welfare standards. Post mortem or at abattoir.
Inputs of animal-housing, food and water, stockperson qualifications, medicine records
