ethics and socially sensitive Flashcards
define socially sensitive research
any research that has direct social consequences for the ppts or the group they represent.
who identified the four aspects of research at a risk of social consequence
sieber and stanley
identify the four aspects of research at risk
- research question
- conduct of research and treatment of ppt
- intepretation of findings
research question
Could be damaging to particular members of the group and trying to add scientific rigour may have big consequences
Conduct of research and treatment of participants
Is the information confidential and is it stored anonymously
what is the insitutional context
Research may be funded and managed by private institutions who may misuse the data / may not understand the findings → misinterpretation
interpretation and applications of finding
Could the research findings be used for other purposes → may lead to wider - impact
E.g IQ tests used to label and discriminate
privacy
During research a researcher might find out more than they intend to and what is done with this information → can lead to invasion of private lives.
confidentiality
PPTs may be reluctant to contribute info following the study due to breaches of privacy - further research may be compromised
valid methodology
If poor will lead to inaccurate findings → these studies are likely to shape social policy which is detrimental to the group represented in the study
deception
Research may lead individuals to believe untruths which could lead to SFP affecting performance
informed consent
PPT may not fully be briefed on what they are conforming to - EWT anxiety / zimbardo / Milgram
equitable treatment
Treatment of ppts must be equal in all ways to ensure well-being and participants future opportunities
scientific freedo
The researcher has the freedom to experiment but must be considerate of any potential harm
ownership of data
The issues of determining ownership involve sponsorship of the research and public accessibility of data
