Canon I
- General Obligations: Maintain knowledge, respect heritage, uphold human rights, consider social & environmental impact, design for safety & dignity.
Canon II
- Obligations to the Public: Follow laws, avoid fraud & bribery, promote sustainability, engage in civic responsibility, provide truthful public statements.
Canon III
- Obligations to the Client: Serve clients competently & honestly, avoid conflicts of interest, maintain confidentiality, ensure fairness in contracts.
Canon IV
- Obligations to the Profession: Uphold honesty & fairness, report unethical conduct, sign/seal only responsible work, represent qualifications accurately.
Canon V
- Obligations to Colleagues: Provide fair work environments, support mentorship, recognize contributions, avoid misrepresentation.
Canon VI
- Obligations to the Environment: Promote sustainability, consider ecosystem impact, encourage conservation, support environmental justice.
Rules of Application, Enforcement & Amendments
Application: applies to the professional activities of all members of the AIA.
Enforcement: The Bylaws of the Institute state procedures for the enforcement of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
Amendments via AIA convention or Board.
Preamble Purpose
Uphold professionalism, integrity, competence.
Preamble Structure
Canons (broad principles of conduct), Ethical Standards (are more specific goals toward which Members should aspire in professional performance and behavior), Rules of Conduct (are mandatory; violation of a Rule is grounds for disciplinary action by the Institute. Rules of Conduct, in some instances, implement more than one Canon or Ethical Standard).

Competence: Maintain professional skills, comply with laws, avoid working beyond expertise.

Conflict of Interest: Disclose financial interests, act impartially, avoid bribes.
