What is an advanced decision?

What can Advanced Decision refusal of treatment be applied to?

If an advanced Decision refusal of treatment is to be made, what must be done?
- Written down
- Signed by patient
- Signed by witness
What are the criteria for an advanced decision?
- over 18
- Clearly specified
- Decision made voluntarily with no external pressures
- Patient able to change mind
Give 3 complications of CPR:
- Rib#
- ruptured spleen
- Hypoxic brain damage
What is an advanced statement?
A statement of wishes that explains the patients likes and dislikes and anything that is important for them to be comfortable/happy.
NOT LEGALLY BINDING
Give 2 examples of advanced statement requests:
- Choice of hospital
- Dietary requirements
What is DoL and DoLs?
DoL = deprivation of liberty. Making decisions or placing restrictions on someone to provide them with the care they need.
DoLS = deprivation of liberty safeguard. Set of checks ensuring the person who is deprived of their liberty is protected and the DoL is appropriate and in their best interests.
Give 2 examples of DoL:
- Continuous supervision and control
- No free to leave
What are the criteria for a DoLs application?
- > 18yo
- Lacks mental capacity
- Best interests
- Least restrictive option
What are 3 main elements of the safeguard? (rights of the patient)
- Patient provided with representative
- Right to challenge the DoL through Court Protection
- DoL review and monitored regularly
Give the hierarchy of decisions:
