Can Do Can’t Do With Participants
Consent
Informed consent ensures that participants are fully aware of the true aims of the research
, the procedure and their rights
Deception
Misleading or withholding information about the true aims of the study to prevent demand characteristics to allow for valid results
Confidentiality
Ensuring that any data from the participants is protected and not leaked
The right to privacy extends to the area where the study took place etc
Debrief
If deception did take place, ensuring that at the end of the study that all participants are told the true aims and results of the study and offered advice counselling etc
Right to withdraw
Participants should have the right at any point in the study to withdraw regardless of circumstances
Protection from harm
As a result of their involvement participants should not be placed st any more risk than they would in their daily lives, and should be protected from physical and psychological harm
BPS CODE OF ETHICS
A quasi-legal document produced by the British psychological society thy instructs psychologists in the U.K. about what behaviour is and is not acceptable when dealing with participants. It is built around for major principles Respect Competence Responsibility Integrity
Other ways of getting consent
Presumptive consent- assuming passed on a similar group of people that the study is acceptable
Prior general consent- give their permission to take part in a number of different studies, knowing that they are being decieved about the true aims
Retrospective consent- participants are asked for their consent during debriefing having already taken part in the study
