Law and Ethics
Law is what we have to do
Ethics is what you should do
Myth 1- in order to make an ethical decision, we must be morally perfect
Even exceptionally good people make poor judgements or unethical act
Myth 2 - Moral Relativism.
Ethical behavior is based on values, and one person’s values are just as good as another. Its adherents believe that any judgement that puts a rein on personel freedom is an intolerable restriction
Myth 3 - the answers to all our ethical problems can be found in our professional codes of ethics.
Codes provide a structure for us to understand our behavior, but they rarely anticipate every problem with which we may be faced
Myth 4 - Making ethical decisions means playing God It’s not up to me to make these decisions
In most ethical dilemmas, you can rely on rules, policies, and laws that provide you with reasonable answers to the dilemma
Myth 5 - People are either ethical or not
Research indicates that people are capable of a variety
of responses to ethical dilemma, ranging from inappropriate to appropriate, from wrong to right, from illegal to legal.
Myth 6 - Real estate professional know when they commit an ethical violation
The ethical dilemmas that agents confront con be so complicated that they need all the resources they have to figure it out
Myth 7 - Adults can’t change deilemmas on their ethics. It’s too late
adults can improve their ethical thinking skills as well as their conduct . The greatest period of increased ethical consciousness is during the 20s and 30’s when your adults face ethical dilemmas on there own. It also occurs when adults face a life transition or crisis that forces them to reevaluate their conduct or thinking it can also increase by education programs
Myth 8 - I am just one person. Nothing I do will make a difference
Everything you do and everything you say no matter how insignificant to you, can bear a message or have a consequence.
Myth 9 - If people would just follow the law, we would not have ethical problems.
The law sets a minimum standard for what is acceptable behavior Living by ethical standards inspires us to do more than the law requires.
Myth 10 - Being ethical conflicts with earning a living and working in the rat race .
Ethic and business are not mutually exclusive terms Practical solutions can be ethical, and the pursuit of ethical excellence can also be valuable.
