Why should Police Ethics be part of the recruit curriculum?
To prepare for the moral challenges of police work.
Define Authority.
The legally granted right to issue commands or give direction to others.
What is a Bribe?
Money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupt the behavior of a person or public official.
What is a Conflict of Interest?
A conflict between a person’s private interests and public obligations; a situation in which a public official’s decisions are influenced by personal interests.
Define Corruption.
Inducement of a public official by improper means to violate duty; forbidden acts involving the misuse of office for gain.
What does Deception refer to?
The act of misleading or the state of being misled; fraud; artifice; trickery.
What is a Dilemma?
A situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives.
Define Discretion.
The authorized capacity to make judgments and choose from among a variety of actions to resolve a problem within the limits of the law and Department policy.
What are Ethics?
Standards of principles of conduct governing a profession; the rules of conduct or duty.
What is a Gift in the context of police ethics?
A thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present.
Define Integrity.
Soundness of moral principles; character.
What does Rule 3 state about Integrity?
Integrity requires that every recruit officer conduct him/herself at all times in a completely honest and forthright manner.
Define Morals.
Capability of distinguishing between right and wrong; conduct or behavior with regard to right and wrong.
What is a Principle?
Statement defining rules of conduct in general terms.
What does Public Trust refer to?
Exercising public authority within the legal limits and according to the ends for which it was created.
What is meant by Truthfulness in police reports?
Shall submit reports on time and be truthful and complete.
What is required for Conformance to laws?
Obey all laws.
What does Rule 113 – section 3 policy require?
Individuals will reflect the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
What is Cannon 6?
Employees shall avoid all conflicts of interest and appearances of impropriety; never accept gratuities.
What is the definition of Anti-Corruption?
Criminal activity; bring a criminal lawyer.
What does IAD stand for?
Internal Affairs Division; rules/regs violations and complaint history.
What must be done for Response/Reporting to anti-corruption?
Oral notification within 24 hours; written notification to commander of AC division within 24 hours.
What does 18 US CODE 666 Embezzlement state?
If a city/town gets more than $10k, and the wrongdoing involves more than $5k, will be tried under this statute – 10 yr felony.
