Now we are going to discuss the topic: SURGICAL LAB: CONDUCT & ETHICS

A

Now we are going to discuss the topic: SURGICAL LAB: CONDUCT & ETHICS

The goal of DSTC /DATC programs is to improve trauma care around the world.
Learning surgical skills is essential for trauma surgeons.
That’s the reason DSTC/DATC use live anaesthetized animals because they provide a unique anatomically and surgically bleeding model.
The use of animal models provides an opportunity for a realistic simulation.
The lab tissue session follows a very strict protocol.
The animal use follows the local regulation regarding zoonotic diseases.
It is recommended to use universal protection equipment.

Q

intrinsic

A

An animal has an intrinsic value, greater than the economic value they may have to man.
Animals shall be treated well and be protected from danger of unnecessary stress and strains.
All involved must be legally qualified and competent
It is forbidden to perform any animal experiment without a license
All DSTC/DATC need to have a certificate of approval from the National Ethics Committee.
Keep in mind that the animal’s protection is not a right granted to the animal, but rather a responsibility given to humans.

Q

The 3 R’s

A

The 3 R’s

When using animals for scientific purposes we are obligated to follow the principle of the three Rs; Reduce, Replace, and Refine.
- Reduce -refers to minimize the number of animals and/or maximize the pedagogical experience for the maximum number of candidates (surgeons + anesthetists + nurses)
The proper and full use of each individual should be ensured during the practical session, leaving time for the instructor and participants to cover the entire curriculum. The full benefit of each individual will increase if DSTCTM and DATCTM principles and techniques are taught at the same time. This will also increase the value the animals will have as a simulant for the human trauma patient.

The “replace” means that animals shall only be used if the same goal cannot be reached using the available alternatives. The DSTCTM program will encourage the use of alternative methods wherever possible, but as there are no comparable alternatives available at the moment, so the use of animals for such purposes is still needed.

Refinement will also be achieved through the constant focus on animal welfare, and animal welfare.

Q

surgical teams

A

The surgical teams:
The surgical team will undertake procedures on both blunt and sharp trauma to the different organs in the abdomen and chest.
Traumas are caused one by one, organ by organ, so as to assure the longest possible survival of the animal

This course is an opportunity to train decision-making skills, hands-on surgical abilities, as well as team communication and teamwork. This is not just a course on surgical procedures; it is much more than that.
