Q

Who said that the Church protected women’s rights, and what did she say about it?

A

Lisa Sowle Cahill

Historically wealthy, powerful men often had concubines (a lower status woman who lived with them like a wife) as well as wives. Polygamy was common, adultery was a crime that virtually only women were accused of, and divorce was exclusively a male prerogative.

The Church banned adultery, made it impossible for men to have concubines and the ban on divorce stopped women abandoning women.

Q

What do Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum say about sexual ethics?

A

State and society should only intervene on matters that cause harm to others.

Human beings need:

Bodily integrity, including opportunities for sexual satisfaction.
Having emotional attachments to things and people outside ourselves; to love those who love and care for us. Removal of fear and anxiety.
