DVLA

A

First seizure

  • type 1: 6 month ban
  • type 2: 5 year ban

Multiple seizures

  • Type 1: 12 month ban
  • Type 2: ban until seizure free for 10 years at least

Stroke / TIA

  • Type 1: at least 1 month ban
  • Type 2: at least 1 year ban

Cardiovascular / unexplained syncope

  • type 1: temporary ban (whilst under investigation)
  • type 2: temporary ban (whilst under investigation)

ACS

  • Type 1
  • –> 1 week ban if successfully treated e.g. angioplasty
  • –> 4 week ban if no angioplasty (or CABG)
  • Type 2: at least 6 week ban, then exercise testing

ICD

  • Type 1: at least 6 month ban (longer if ICD discharges)
  • Type 2: permanent ban

HOCM

  • Type 1: no ban
  • Type 2: permanent ban

Diabetes with hypoglycaemia unawareness
- banned from type 1 and type 2 driving

Diabetic retinopathy

  • type 1: variable
  • type 2: banned

Diabetes

  • Type 1: 1, 2 or 3 year licence, no longer as long as good hypoglycaemic awareness and meets visual standards, no severe waking hypos within 3 months
  • Type 2: requires annual licence renewal providing:
  • –> Free of hypoglycaemic episodes during past 12 months
  • –> Full hypoglycaemic awareness
  • –> 3 month record of glucose monitoring carried at least twice daily
