Tarsoff v. Board of Regents of the University of California (1976)
- Prosenjit Poddar met Tanya Tarasoff at UCBerkeley and wanted a serious relationship but she did not
- rejection caused Poddar to undergo a severe emotional crisis and he confided in a campus psychologist that he was going to kill Tanya
- psychologist notified campus police to have him committed
- they briefly detained him but was released because he appeared rational and promised to stay away from her
- at the order of the psychologist’s superior (psychiatrist), no steps were taken to commit Poddar or warn Tanya
- in late October, Poddar murdered Tanya
