Tarsoff v. Board of Regents of the University of California (1976)

A
  • Prosenjit Poddar met Tanya Tarasoff at UCBerkeley and wanted a serious relationship but she did not
  • rejection caused Poddar to undergo a severe emotional crisis and he confided in a campus psychologist that he was going to kill Tanya
  • psychologist notified campus police to have him committed
  • they briefly detained him but was released because he appeared rational and promised to stay away from her
  • at the order of the psychologist’s superior (psychiatrist), no steps were taken to commit Poddar or warn Tanya
  • in late October, Poddar murdered Tanya
