Ethical Issues with Assistance Dogs Flashcards
State a negative ethical issue with the use of assistance dogs
The dog is being removed from its natural environment and is being placed into overstimulating (and possibly distressing) environments
Why is an incorrect environment (excessive exposure to the public - malls, shops, etc) an ethical issue with the use of assistance dogs?
The dog may be harmed whilst working (may be grabbed/rough-housed/fed toxic foods by the public) & may become unwell as a result of excessive and prolonged stress
State a positive ethical issue with the use of assistance dogs
The dogs are able to exhibit their natural behaviours (scenting/searching), able to become enriched by their jobs & are provided with sustainable and positive source of dopamine, as they often love their jobs
Why is assistance dogs’ ability to exhibit natural behaviours whilst working important?
Enriches the dogs - as they are able to utilise their genetics to provide a useful output for their natural behaviours & instincts
State an example of assistance dogs being able to utilise their natural behaviours whilst working
Labradors are able to retrieve medication/dropped items for handlers with mobility/visibility issues
