Ethical issues and dealing with them Flashcards
What is conflict?
When a conflict exists between the rights of participants and the aims of research.
Ethical committees weigh up costs and benefits before deciding whether a study should go ahead.
What is informed consent, and how do you deal with it ?
This is informed judgement about whether to take part, but it may reveal aims.
To deal with this get participants to sign a consent form, where appropriate seek parental consent, alternatively you can get retrospective consent, which is getting consent after the study.
What is decpetion, and how do you deal with it?
Deception is deliberately misleading or withholding information so consent is not informed.
To deal with this, at the end of the study participants should be given a debrief where they are advised of the..
-true aims of the investigation,
-details that were not given during the study
-what their data will be used for and
-their right to withhold data.
Outline protection from harm.
The issue is that participants should be at no more risk than they would be in everyday life.
-To deal with this they should be given the right to withdraw at each stage of the research process.
-Should be reassured that their behaviour was typical/normal during the debrief.
-Researchers should provide counselling if participants have been distressed etc.
Outline Privacy and confidentiality.
The issue is that we have the right to control information about ourselves, if this is invaded, confidentiality should be respected.
- To deal with this, if personal details are held there must be protected. Usually no personal details are recorded.
- Researchers refer to participants using numbers, or alibis etc.
- Participants personal data cannot be shared with other researchers.
