ethical implications Flashcards
what are ethical implications
ethical issues arise when there is a conflict between psychology need to gain valid and valuable research findings but at the same time preserve the rights and dignity of participants
- this is why ethical guidelines were established
what is hard to guard against
the social impact of psychological research once it has been conducted
what are socially sensitive researchers
some areas are likely to be controversial and be subject to greater social sensitivity
e.g. studies that examine the cognitive process involved in Long term memory is likely to have far fetched consequences for those that take part in the broader social groups that the participants represent
However, just because this is the case, it should not lead to psychologists “shying away” from research that may be socially sensitive - because of such research, psychologists may have a social responsibility to carry out (Aronson 1999)
what are the ethical issues in socially sensible research
Sieber and Stanely identified a number of concerns that researchers should be mindful of when conducting socially sensitive research
- implication
- uses/ public policy
- The validity of the research
