What are ethical implications?
The impact that psychological research has in terms of other people, especially participants. Therefore ethical guidelines were established to help protect those involved in research.
What is social sensitivity?
Studies which can have potential consequences for the class of individuals represented by the research. The implications, uses and validity of the research have to be considered before conducting research.
What research is there that can be considered socially sensitive?
Burt conducted research which said the 11+ should be used, but it was found that he lied in research.
Bowlby’s research found that maternal deprivation was important for children and this meant that free child care places were not offered.
Shockley found that there may be genetic reasons for black Americans scoring lower on IQ tests than white Americans.
What are the evaluations of socially sensitive research?
Benefits of socially sensitive research-It promotes greater understanding and benefits society.
Framing the question-The way in which research questions are phrased may influence the way in which findings are interpreted.
Who gains?-Socially sensitive research has been used by the government to shape social policy and to control people.
Social control-Legislation has been used to justify social control and sterelisation of those who had low intelligence.
Costs and benefits-Benefits of research must be weighed up and the ethics committee is used to help this.
