Describe Consequentialism/ Utilitarianism
Maximize positive consequences. “The greater good”, the most good for the most amount of people
- Give to charity because it feeds the hungry
- Don’t steal because it hurts people
Describe Deontology
An action is good if it follows from moral rules/commands. Duty based.
- In opposition to consequentialism- consequences don’t matter, only following the moral law matters
- Not lying even if you think it will have a positive consequence
Describe Virtue ethics
Education based ethical system
- Read about courageous people, then try and be like them
Describe Relativism
All ethical frameworks are subjective- anchored in a place and time, no absolute or objective Right or Wrong
Describe ethical decision making model
- Develop problem statement
- identify alternatives
- choose an alternative
- implement decision
- evaluate results
What is the PAPA model?
A model for analyzing ethics in IT- Privacy, Accuracy, Property, Access
Describe Privacy (PAPA)
How do we keep information about individuals data private? What are the safeguards? What can a person choose to keep private
Describe Accuracy (PAPA)
Who is responsible for the accuracy for data? Who is accountable for inaccurate data?
Describe Property (PAPA)
Who owns the information (the company that collects it)? Who can buy the information? How should access to intellectual property be regulated? Who places value on intellectual property?
Describe Access (PAPA)
What information does a person have a right to access? What safeguards exist? How do we guarantee equal access amongst different economic or social groups?
