Tanakh & Talmud
What is Tanakh
- Source of ethical guidelines
- Contains codes of positive and negative guidelines (613 Mitzvot) e.g. 10 commandments
what is Talmud
- Moses passed on to prophets>Rabbis>Talmud
- Used to interpret Torah and Rabbinic law for issues not coved in torah
- These rules are interpreted by modern jews to resolve issues
Jewish beliefs on bioethics
A) Man is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)
B) Jews are in a covenant with God (Genesis 15:18)
C) Torah is gods gift to people and communicates his will (exodus 31:18)
D) Act in line with God’s ethics (Micah 6:8)
Teachings on bioethics
A) “Thou salt not kill” - exodus 20:13
B) “There is a time to be born and a time to die” - Ecclesiastes - 3:2
C) Human life is sacred - Genesis 1:27)
D) There is a duty on all to save & heal the sick (Leviticus 19:16)
Bioethical issues
1) Abortion - Usually disapproves but allowed in cases where mothers health is at risk
2) Euthanasia - Active(Forbidden) Passive(Permitted)
