Ethers & Phenols, Amines Flashcards

1
Q

Q

How are ethers named?

A

The two groups on either side of the oxygen are named, followed by the word ether. E.g. Dimethyl ether, Methyl isopropyl ether

Q

What are amines?

A

Compounds and functional groups that contain a basic nitrogen atom with a lone pair of electrons.

Amines are derivatives of ammonia (NH3), where one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by organic substituents such as alkyl and aryl groups

Q

How are amines named?

A

In the common system: by adding the suffix “amine” to the name of the alkyl group.
In the systematic system: amines are named analogous to alcohols, except the suffix “amine” is used instead of the suffix “ol”
