What’s Estuary English?
Describes an accent that originated in London and has spread out to other parts of the country, it’s a modified cockney.
Why has Estuary English come about?
Because people have moved away from London
Cockneys have tried to move closer to RP
RP speakers have downwards diverged to fit in
It’s seen as fashionable
It’s viewed as classless
What’s David crystal’s view on Estuary English?
He says people choose Estuary English because of the negative connotations of RP, it’s a good middle ground
What does Trudgill think about EE?
He thinks that EE won’t be as popular as RP, as there will always be people who speak RP.
It ain’t fully spread but similar things may happen to accents across the country
What does Wells say about EE?
EE has been allowed to spread because there no social class system
