Establishing and Maintaining Tactical Situational Awareness Flashcards
What is Situation Awareness ?
Situational Awareness (SA) is the combined knowledge of friendly forces, hostile forces, the environment, and all other relevant aspects of the battle space.
SA varies over time, as relevant information and intelligence is synthesized, confirmed, denied, or becomes irrelevant or outdated.
Situational Understanding is SA to which human judgement has been applied; it leads to action and decision.
What is Tactical Situational Awareness ?
Tactical SA adds a key component to SA – tactical thinking, or strategizing – so that you are not only actively aware of your surroundings, but you are also actively planning on how to use your surroundings.
Define Command and define Control.
Command is the purposeful exercise of authority over structures, resources, people, and activities.
Control is the process through which a commander, assisted by their staff, organizes, directs, and co-ordinates the activities of the forces allocated to them, or the means by which command is exercised.
What are the five major HQ work environment ?
- Intelligence (G2)
- Operation (G3)
- Plans (G5)
- Command Information (G6)
- Administration (G1)
What is a Commad Post (CP) ?
- A Command Post ESTABLISHES and MAINTAINS C2 of all combat actions, administrative actions, and support functions on behalf of the Commander.
- Provides SA of the battlespace to subordinate, flanking, and superior HQs and units.
What are the 3 types of Command Post (CP) ?
- Main (Step Up)
- Forward (Alternate)
- Tactical
What is the role of the Main Command Post (CP) ?
The Main HQ provides the commander with the core functionality required to command, manage, and plan full spectrum operations.
The Main HQ is the primary location where the commander conducts all command functions, and is where the staff is located (all staff branches and Coordination Centres (CCs)*).
What is the role of the Step Up Command Post (CP) ?
A Step Up CP is a temporary C2 grouping that facilitates continuous support to the commander, during movement of the primary HQ echelon; the Step Up is considered part of the Main HQ.
What is the role of the Forward/Alternative Command Post (CP) ?
The Forward CP (or Alt CP) provides the commander with an adequate local capability, and full remote access to all functionality required to command, manage, and plan full spectrum operations.
It is a relatively small, mobile CP echelon used by the commander when the Main CP is not operating (e.g. moving), or there is a requirement to command from a forward (‘alternate’) location for a limited time (several days up to a month).
What is the role of the Tactical Command Post (CP) ?
The Tactical CP (Tac CP / “9er Tac”) provides a small, highly mobile CP that may be rapidly deployed by the command element; it has limited connectivity and staff planning resources, and is intended to operate for short periods.
What are the roles of a Duty Officer (DO) ?
- Maintain SA
- Serve as focal point for Ops-related information
- Monitor Comms and EMCON
- Maintain Ops Log (RFIs, PIRs, IRs)
