Essential Tremor Flashcards
1
Q
What is the most common movement disorder
A
essential tremor
2
Q
Etiology
A
aging- more common in older people
family history- 3 loci IDed, but not gene known yet
Environmental: harmane (meat protein), lead exposure
3
Q
Pathophysiology
A
Two loci:
- cerebellar degeneration (increase in purkinje cells, neuronal loss in dentate nucleus)
- Brainstem lewy bodies = accumulation of lewy bodies in locus (ceruleus, substantia nigra)
4
Q
Impairments
A
- tremor
- mobility and balance
- tandem and midline termor
- gait
- effects of age
- dual task
5
Q
Characteristics of essential tremor
A
- rhythmic, oscillatory movements
- kinetic tremor (during movements); has intentional component, seen in arms and hand
- postural tremor (arms, head, voice, jaw, tongue)
- rest tremor (occasionally in absence of bradykinesia or rigidity)
