Etiology

A

aging- more common in older people
family history- 3 loci IDed, but not gene known yet
Environmental: harmane (meat protein), lead exposure

Pathophysiology

A

Two loci:

  1. cerebellar degeneration (increase in purkinje cells, neuronal loss in dentate nucleus)
  2. Brainstem lewy bodies = accumulation of lewy bodies in locus (ceruleus, substantia nigra)

Characteristics of essential tremor

A
  1. rhythmic, oscillatory movements
  2. kinetic tremor (during movements); has intentional component, seen in arms and hand
  3. postural tremor (arms, head, voice, jaw, tongue)
  4. rest tremor (occasionally in absence of bradykinesia or rigidity)
