CD media

A

Compact Disc Digital Audio (CDDA): Was created in the 1970’s by the music industry. It was designed to store 74 minutes of music.

ISO 9660: Took the CDDA format and created a format that could store folders and files.

Compact Disc Read-Only Memory (CD-Rom): These were the formatted ISO 9660’s. Used as a distribution media. 1st generations of these stored 650 Mbs of data.
2nd generation stored more media towards the center and could store a total of 700 Mbs.

Compact Disc Recordable(CD-R) : Burn once type optical media. CD-R drives have one laser for reading and one laser for writing.

Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW): These have the ability to be read and rewritten many times.

Most common CD is 700 megabyte/80 minute.

CD’s have a speed of reading at around 52x.

CD-R has a read speed and a write speed.

CD-RW has a read speed, a write speed and a re-write speed.

DVD Media

A

Designed to store video. Came with menu systems. Capacities are measured in Gigabytes. They can be single sided or double-sided.

Dual layer DVD’s have two layers of data on one side. Each layer is separated by a half mirror.

DVD’s have a numbering system to identify the type of DVD.

DVD’s handle the ISO 9660 format so they can be formatted to create data files.

El Torito makes a DVD bootable. These are called live CD’s.

DVD-ROM: These are mastered so they can not be written on.

DVD+R: These are write once and read as many times as you want format.

DVD+RW: These are multi write and read DVD’s.

DVD-RAM: Came in a cartridge which used a specific drive.

Region Codes: Are built into a DVD because DVD’s were designed for video. The US is region 1. Both the player and DVD will be identified as such.
