National Service
A period of compulsory service in the armed forces during peacetime which was phased out of the UK by 1963
Why was National Service used in the past?
- To resolve the issue of manpower shortages in the wake of the second World War
Why is National Service no longer used ?
Large armies are seen as less effective than modern weaponry

- Gives members a sense of purpose
- Increases community pride
- Increases discipline and life skills

What are disciplinary sanctions?
Schools can sanction pupils if they misbehave examples of sanctions include a verbal warning, a letter home, removal from the classroom and detention.

- Long lasting effects on students mental and emotional wellbeing
- Effects on academic development
- Expulsion can continue the cycle of poverty
What are alternatives to disciplinary sanctions?
Non punitive measures such as conflict resolution, peer mediation and community building activities
Reasons for Non punitive measures.
- Makes children reflect on their actions and learn from their mistakes
- Align with educational goals such as empathy and social skills
- Build trust between teachers and students, creating an environment where students feel valued and motivated to grow

- Erodes social harmony
- Not only effects the victim but also the thief
Reasons Prisoners Should be Allowed to Vote
- Allows for rehabilitation and integration back into society
- Democracy thrives on inclusivity and the participation of all eligible citizens.
- We can limit voting rights to those convicted of less serious offences or those nearing the end of their sentences.
