Essay Questions Flashcards
Why does the San Francisco Bay Area experience strong west winds during the summer but not during the winter
The San Francisco Bay Area experiences stronger west winds in the summer than in winter. In the summer there are differences in the temperature and air pressure. Over the ocean the temperatures are a cold fifty five degrees and the air pressure is high. Over the tri valley the temperature is a hot ninety to one hundred degrees and the air pressure is low. The air molecules moving from high pressure to low pressure causes wind. In the winter the temperatures in the air pressure are very similar. Both over the ocean and valley the temperatures are a cold fifty five to sixty degrees an the air tepees sure is high. There is little to no movement of he air particles therefor there is wind.
What 4 variables change air pressure
There are four variables that can affect air pressure. This first variable is humidity. Humidity is the amount if water vapor that is in the air. The mixture if the vapor and air causes the air to be lighter and have less air pressure. Another variable is volume. Volume is the measure of the amount of space something takes up. Air pressure in a closed system like a bag will decrease if the closed system grows larger because the particles spread out. An additional variable is temperature. Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. When the air temperature increases the gas molecules speed up and spread out decreasing the pressure. The final variable is altitude. Altitude is the height above earths surface. As altitude increases air pressure decreases because molecules spread out.
Why are three variables that cause earth to be heated unevenly by the sun y
Earth receives uneven heating from the sun. First the tilt and orbit causes uneven heating. We feel uneven heating through seasons. In the northern hemisphere. we receive more heat energy when we are tilted towards the sun in summer. In winter we are tilted away from the sun and get less heat energy. Next the variable of
composition causes a difference in heating. Land heats up and cools down quickly. Water heats and cools slowly. Land near oceans have moderate temperatures because of the sea. Earths shape is the best variable for uneven heating. At the equator the sunlight is directly overhead at a ninety degree
angle The suns energy is concentrated. Above or below the equator the angle is larger than ninety degrees and the energy is more spread out.
