ESSAY Q#2 Flashcards
chapters 5-10
How do atmospheric windows limit observations made from Earth’s surface?
Gamma Rays, X Rays, and some Radio Waves are ABSORBED high in earths atmosphere.
Ultra Violet Radiation is ABSORBED in the Ozone.
Infared Radiation (longer wave length) ABSORBED by water vapor (in the form of clouds) in the lower atmosphere.
What causes chromatic aberration? Why does it not occur in reflection g telescopes?
Chromatic aberration occurs in refracting telescopes because the telescope refracts light as is passes through the glass and this causes the failure to focus everything at one point.
The lease is denser than air and different wavelengths causes a bend; shorter wavelength= more bent and vice versa.
Blue light is more in focus than red light.
Reflecting telescopes reflect light in a mirror so there is no refraction occurring, only a reflection of an image.
Describe the appearance of each of the 3 types of spectra described by Kirchhoff’s laws. Describe how each of the 3 types of spectra is formed.
Continuous Spectrum: BLACK BODY RADIATION. Continuous flow (uninterrupted
)of colors in spectrum.
Absorption Spectrum: Some atoms are missing from the spectrum and show as ABSORPTION LINES (black separation lines between colors). Atoms in the gas absorb photons of certain wavelengths which are missing from the spectrum—— creating absorption lines
Emission Spectrum: Emitted by photons in a low density excited gas, EMISSION LINES (bright line spectra) are visible in the spectrum .
EMISSION AND ABSORPTION CAUSED BY CONTINUOUS.
