what did the National Insurance Act 1946 do?
contribution system of insurance to cover you against illness, unemployment, maternity leave and death grant to cover funeral costs.
what was good about the National Insurance Act 1946?
helped people who needed it the most which benefitted many lives in Britain
what did the National Assistance Act 1948 do?
provided benefits for those not covered by National Insurance Act. National Assistance boards set up to help those whose resources were insufficient.
what was bad about the National Insurance Act 1956?
weekly contributions took up 5% of average earnings, better off keeping their money.
what did the Housing Acts 1946/1949 do?
introduced to help build homes for the working class after the war.
what was good about the National Assistance Act 1948?
payments could be given for essentials (bedding clothing etc) as well as weekly payments- never happened under liberals
what was bad about the National Assistance Act 1948?
“means tested” so unpopular especially with old even though wasn’t as harsh as earlier tests. this put some off applying.
what did the New Towns Act 1946 do ?
introduced brand new towns/ villages with new homes for people to move into.
what was good about the Housing Acts 1946/1949?
local authorities given financial assistance to building materials which helped build 1.25 million new homes.
what did the National Service Act 1946 do?
gave British citizens free medical assistance for the first time.
what was bad about the Housing Acts 1946/1949?
no where near enough homes and people remained in “prefab” homes which were army barracks by the end of 1951.
what was good about the New Towns Act 1946?
14 new towns were built across Britain including Glenrothes and East Kilbride in Scotland, providing clean and safe homes away from overcrowding.
what was bad about the New Towns Act 1946?
the towns were soulless and often left working class families cut off from previous areas due to lack of transport.
what was good about the National Health Service Act 1946?
benefits were free at point of use, no patient being asked to pay for treatment like they had to before these reforms were put in place.
what was bad about the National Health Service Act 1946?
national insurance only covered 9% of running costs so had to be paid through taxation-public never happy about tax as they might may be able to afford it.
