Unification of Germany
In 1815, there were 39 German states,
but in 1871, Germany was unified under Prussian leadership,
after victory in the wars of unification.
Nazi Rise to Power
Prior to Hitler becoming Chancellor, Germany had struggled for political stability.
The Weimar Republic suffered from economic instability,
that eventually led to Nazi takeover of power.
Nazi Consolidation of Power
Once in power, Hitler acted quickly to establish a totalitarian state.
The regime deployed acts of terror,
but debate continues about the popularity of the regime between 1933-39,
due in part to its social policies which appealed to many German people.
Women’s Votes
By 1928, women had achieved equal suffrage with men.
This was the result of years of campaigning by women’s suffrage groups,
combined with the catalytic effects of WW1 and changes in attitudes about women in society.
Liberal Reforms
In the 1906 elections, the Liberal party won an enormous majority
and this led to a series of welfare and government intervention reforms,
which looked to solve poverty and disease caused by the industrial revolution.
Liberal Reforms Effectiveness
The liberals came into power in 1906.
Due to the findings of Booth and Rowntree,
it was made clear that there was a need for social welfare reforms.
These reforms covered 4 main groups:
