Created many new innovations:

  1. Strings playing w/ wood of bow (col legno)
  2. Frequently alternating plucked sounds (pizzicato)
  3. First to use orch of 100+ instruments
  4. Dies Irae melody used to represent death → led to influence many composers to do the same
  5. Use of actual church bells
