Q

Women

A

through caring responsibilities. Women are more likely than men to take career breaks or go part time to care for children, elderly or disabled relatives. Mothers on average spend 10 years less in full time work than fathers. Individualists argue that this is often through choice, but collectivists argue that it’s due to society’s traditional expectations. Women also account for 90% of lone parents whose caring responsibilities make it particularly challenging to work full time.

Women who go part time will experience a loss in income and are further affected as on average part time wages increase at a slower rate than full time wages. Also women who take a career break can be further affected when they return to work as it can be difficult to return at the same level. Overall it is clear that women face inequality through the traditional expectations of caring responsibilities.

Just through having a child it dramatically widens the gender pay gap between man and women, as women tend to go part time to fulfil caring responsibilities.

Q

BAME

A

Some employers may have a deliberate or unconscious bias towards white people when recruiting and promoting employers. A select committee report found that some Muslim women were removing their hijab in interviews or making their names sound more ‘English’ to increase their chances of getting work. Research by the guardian found that many young black men are also changing their surname to improve their chances.

Young black men in particular often feel they experience prejudice due stereotypes around aggression, violence and gang culture. Therefore it can be said that BAME experience inequality through discrimination, employers bias towards whites and the groups lack of confidence within themselves. It could be said that if you are born white you have an advantage in life. For example, BAME workers earn on average 26% less than whites.
