Introduction: Menu
Now there are various hindrances to global food security, however in this essay we will only delve into 3 in detail: the meat industry, food waste and climate change.
Paragraph 1: Lead in
Firstly, the global meat industry is a considerably wasteful industry.
Paragraph 1: fact/ comparison (1)
As it uses 18,000 litres of water and 31 kWh per kilo, that is twice the amount of water a single person uses per month and the same amount of electricity that a middle class family uses for a whole day.
Paragraph 1: fact/ comparison (2)
It also uses 3.5 kilograms of grain to feed these animals; which could instead be used to feed 15 people.
Paragraph 1: Lead out
Therefore, the meat industry has a lot of work when it comes to sustainability making it a key challenge in achieving global food security.
Paragraph 2: Lead in
In addition, food wastage around the globe has been proven by the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers to be so bad, that over half of the food produced every year goes to waste;
Paragraph 2: fact/ comparison
; which is equivalent to 1.3 billion tons and consists of 45 trillion tons of water. To put this into perspective that is 217 million elephants and 18 million olympic sized pools.
Paragraph 2: Lead out
Therefore, food wastage around the world needs to be improved in the future otherwise the waste’s gases will cause our extinction along with starvation.
Paragraph 3: Lead in
Building upon the last point, climate change, which scientists have ruled to be the biggest opponent in stopping global food security;
Paragraph 3: fact/ comparison (1)
; hurts our crops through the assistance of pests and diseases.40% of all crops have been deemed inedible due to climate changes effect on our planet meaning that pests and diseases are thriving and growing stronger in warm and moist climates.
Paragraph 3: fact/ comparison (2)
Also climate change is the cause of more frequent extreme weather. For example drought, which has always been a frequent type of natural disaster; has increased at an alarming rate and for the last 4 decades has had the worst impact on crops. An instance of this in recent years is the drought in Ethiopia and neighbouring countries which caused crop yields to decrease by 60%.
Paragraph 3: Lead out
Therefore, climate change is a serious enemy against our goal for global food security.
Conclusion: Adress the question
In conclusion, there are a multitude of challenges to global food security.
