The Stonewall Rebellion of 1969 is viewed as the pivotal moment in the history of gay rights globally.
Stonewall rebellion leading to change in NZ
The Stonewall Rebellion led to a change in New Zealand, following the rebellion The Homosexual Law Reform Act was passed on the 8th of March 1985.
Facts about Homosexual Law Reform act
There were three previous attempts to change the law but it was finally passed in 1985. The bill was split into two sections decriminalising sexual offence between men and consensual heterosexual anal intercourse, as well as protecting minors of both sexes. The second part of the bill would make it illegal to discriminate against one based on their sexual orientation. The bill was narrowly passed 49 to 44 votes on the 9th of July 1986, increasing the rights of gay New Zealanders.
2005 law change
The rebellion was a catalyst for societal change in terms of LGBTQ+ rights with the Civil Unions Act which came into effect in 2005, allowing marriages between same-sex couples, and increasing rights for gay couples.
Recent govt change
Recently in 2022 Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act was passed 112 to 8. It makes it a civil offence to perform conversion therapy on anyone who is younger than 18 or anyone who lacks decision-making abilities, said person could go to jail for up to 3 years.
Ongoing issues examples
There are ongoing issues in regard to the LGBTQ+ community with gays, lesbians and bisexuals on average twice as likely to have depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, as well as school students are 3 times more likely to be bullied and transgender students are 4.5 times more likely. Due to the Stonewall Rebellions positive changes could occur with increased LGBTQ+ rights due to liberal ideology, though there was opposition to this due to ideologies such as Christian conservative ideology.

We will work with schools on providing gender neutral bathrooms and research has shown fostering belonging in the school environment improves student achievement,”, their viewpoint is shaped by an liberal ideology. Those with liberal ideology believe in equality and change which reflects the society at the time. As well as the protection of human rights and progress laws.
