What did Brian Tamaki do/response

A

Brian Tamaki holds a Christian conservative ideology which has influenced his response to the LGBTQ+ community. Brian Tamaki’s belief in the conservative Christian ideology led to his and the Destiny Church where they created the ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign. The ‘Enough is Enough campaign in 2004 with around 5000 people marching (majority men who were members of the Destiny Church) was created in response to civil unions which allowed same-sex couples the same rights as married couples. Tamaki and Destiny Church were influenced by an christian ideology with the belief that by allowing same-sex couples the same rights as straight couples this will lead to the ruination of society due to breaking away from traditionals as marriage is viewed as a foundation and institution of society. Christian conservatism influences Brian Tamaki and Destiny’s Church response to LGBTQ+ with them strongly promoting heteronormative narrative, as well as the belief that they are exempt from following laws which protect LGBTQ+ people. The ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign was unsuccessful and was based on an Chrstian conservative ideology.

Q

What did Shaneel Lal do/response

A

Shaneel Lal’s actions in response to the LGBTQ+ community were influenced by her liberal ideology. Lal was an trangender New Zealand activist who played a key role in the banning of conversion therapy in New Zealand. Lal’s ideology shaped their actions with them believing in change and the protection of human rights which liberals believed that conversion therapy infringes on. In 2019 they formed the Conversion Therapy Action Group in 2019, they also help a petition in 2021 which had over 150,000 signatures to ban conversion therapy. Lal actions led to positive change which aligns with their ideology as tolerance is another important idea in liberalism as they expect and wish for tolerance of sexuality, gender, races in order to allow these people to thrive. There is a strong connection in liberalism ot justice, freedom, equality and affirmative action. Ideology is highly influential in people’s actions and as liberalism prioritises human rights and equality this led to Lal wanting for better circumstances for LGBTQ+ people. Liberalism opposes conservatism as they wish for change whereas conservative values change, Lal holds liberal beliefs, which influenced her response to LGBTQ+ rights in New Zealand.

Evalution of response Liberal

A

The liberal ideology has influenced the LGBTQ+ community within New Zealand, specifically there were significant changes in recent years. The liberal ideologies values of change which aligns with societal values and is progressive, social justice and human rights impact the liberal ideology, this led to them make changes to a significant extent. The first reform to occur was the Homosexual Law Reform Act which decriminalised sex between men 16 years and above (women were never prosecuted), the law though was only narrowly passed with 49 for and 44 against on 9th of July 1986. In around 18 years following the reform being passed there has been massive strides in LGBTQ+ with the first major milestone being the Civil Unions Act 2004 which allowed same-sex couples an ability to have civil unions which was passed 65 to 55. Then to the legalise love campaign which Lousia Wall headed. The act allowed same-sex couples the same rights of opposite-sex couples in regards specifically to adoption, the Marriage Amendment Act was then passed in 2013, 77 to 44. Following 2022 where conversation therapy was banned where 69% of the public was in favour of, with it passing 112 to 8. This illustrates the extent in which liberal ideology has expanded with a larger group of people supporting LGBTQ+ law reforms and the MPs who support it demonstrating it. The extent in which the liberal ideology has influenced New Zealand is large with major strides occurring which REWARDED same-sex couples and LGBTQ+ identify people more protections and human rights. As well in schools this is seen with pride weeks noccuring and support groups such as in Glendowie College. The reforms and laws reflect an liberal ideology whose extent of the impact has become larger as time progresses.

Q

Evaultion of response chrsitian conservtiven

A

Christian conservatives’ influence has decreased as the year progressed. Overtime as liberal ideology has gotten more prominent and grasped a greater percentage of the public and more diversity within religion and New Zealand christian conservative ideology has decreased, the extent of an impact on the general public has decreased. Christina conservatives held a majority of support prior to 1986 there was massive stigma surrounding people who identified within the LGBTQ+ umbrella and demonised and abused those who were openly gay, Julia McCrossin stated about LGBTQ+ in the 1960s “You have to imagine a time when there was nothing positive in the media, or anywhere, about homosexuality’”. Christian conservative ideology was still prominent when liberal law reforms occurred such as the homosexual law reform act in 1986 in which it only narrowly passed through parliament. In current society there are still examples of christian conservative ideology in which they still value and believe in tradition, heteronormative, god doesn’t make mistakes and that they are exempt from laws which go against their belief. Brian Tamaki and the Destiny Church still hold strong in their beliefs, with them blaming the 2012 Christchurch earthquakes on god punishing New Zealand for our sins of allowing LGBTQ+ to gain standard human rights to protesting the civil unions act in 2004 with their enough is enough campaign. An Christina conservative ideology is still prominent currently with LGBTQ+ youth at a higher risk of having mental health issues with a report by health promotion agency reporting that rainbow identified kids 56% have experienced mental health issues in comparison to the 30% of others. The impact of Cghrsitina conservatism is still within New Zealand with schools such as Bethlehem College forcing those who attend to sign an slip that acknowledge that “Marriage is an institution created by God in which one man and one woman enter into an exclusive relationship intended for life, and that marriage is the only form of partnership approved by God for sexual relations”. The decreasing impact of Chrisitan conservatism is seen but still has an effect on society.

C + C

A

Overall in comparing the extent to which each ideology had an impact on New Zealand one can argue that Chrsitina conservatism has had a larger impact over the course of time, but in recent years Liberal ideology has taken presidents. This is due to multiple reasons, christian conservatism has had a greater extent of an impact in the past seen in laws which criminalised those who were gay to the law to decriminalise it only narrowly passing, the protesting in modern day and the mental health and discrimination which LGBTQ+ face. Though liberal ideology has taken more of a charge in recent years, this can be seen in the laws which have been reformed to reflect the changing point of views in New Zealand, the past also while strongly christian conservatism also represents liberal ideology as the decriminalisation of LGBTQ+ an massive and progressive step in history. The recent law changes as well highlight the extent to which liberalism has had on societal issues and how as the years progress liberal ideology has had a greater impact, seen in how the margins for each bill passing become larger from 49 to 44 in 1986 to 112 to 8 in 2022 for the homosexual law reform bill and the conversion therapy bill. The acceptance as well is seen in schools where currently there are organisations such as InsideOUT who help schools with LGBTQ+ related activities.

Overall in regards to LGBTQ+ issues liberal ideology has had a greater extent of an impact.
