ESS flashcards midterm
What are the stages of succession?
pioneer, intermediate and climax
What is succession?
The natural process of an ecosystem evolving after the introduction of life or more commonly after a natural disaster
What is predation?
Predation keeps animal populations in check –> predator and prey
Define a species.
Species are organisms with shared characteristics that can interbreed.
Define genetic diversity
Genetic diversity is the amount of variance in genes within a species in an area.
Define biodiversity
Biodiversity is the overall variance in species, ecosystems etc in an area.
Define species diversity
Species diversity is the number and differnece between species in an ecosystem.
Define habitat diversity.
Habitat diversity is variation of ecosystems in an area (mountain, laek, pond, marsh, forest)
What is the IUCN red list?
The IUCN red list is the inventory of the global conservation status and extinction risk of species globally.
What are flows in the water cycle & egs.
Flows are water transportation such as runoff, percolation, snowmelt.
What are storages in the water cycle & egs
Storages are where water is kept for extended periods of time, aquifers, lakes, oceans.
What is eutrophication
Eutrophication is when there is an excess level of nutrients present in a water source leading to algae blooms, these algae blooms take the oxygen in the water and block sunlight, meaning plants die and animals die. The increase in nutrients from decomposing dead animals leads to more algae blooms and the cycle continues.
