ES- Hydrogen Halides Flashcards
What is produced when making HCl with NaCl + c . H2SO4?
HCl only as a gas
What do we use to make the hydrogen halides?
Conc H2SO4
Sulphuric acid
What you’ll you see when making HCl?
Fizzing and white misty fumes
Is it suitable to make HCl with c. H2SO4?
Yes as only HCl is formed
What is produced when making HBr with NaBr+ c . H2SO4?
HBr+ So2 + Br2
What you’ll you see when making HBr?
Fizzing + white misty fumes + orange/ brown bromine vapour.
Is it suitable to make HBr with c. H2SO4?
No as there is a motive of gases
What is produced when making HI with NaI+ c . H2SO4?
HI + H2S +I2 vapour
What you’ll you see when making HI ?
Fizzing + white misty fumes + purple vapour + egg smell
Is it suitable to make HI with c. H2SO4?
No as there is a mix of gasses
What do we use instead of c. H2SO4 to make pure hydrogen halides?
Phosphoric acid
Why can we not use a test tube suspended in water to capture hydrogen halides?
hydrogen halides are very solvable in water so will produce an acid when they react.
How do we capture hydrogen halides?
Downward delivery or gas syringe
What bonding is used in hydrogen halides?
Covalent
How do the hydrogen halides react when water is added?
They all react to make an acidic solution
How do hydrogen halides react when NH3 is added?
They produce NH4x and a white smoke.
E.g. HF + NH3 —> NH4F
How do hydrogen halides react when they are heated?
HCl + HF do not react due to strong bonds
but HBr and HI decomposes back to its elements H2 + x2
with purple vapour for HI
and HBr produces orange vapour
How do hydrogen halides react when conc sulfuric acid is added?
HF + HCl have no reaction
HBr reacts to br2 + so2
Hi reacts to I2 + H2S
