Erythropoietin Flashcards
What is EPO?
a hormone which circulates at all times and control the production of RBC
Where is EPO produced?
Majority the kidneys and some in the liver
What happens to EPO during hypoxia?
Increased EPO release from kidneys stimulating the production of RBC
What can cause a release of EPO?
Drop in Hb levels
Fall in PO2
Increased tissue demand for O2
What is the reticulocyte count?
percentage of total RBC
What is chronic mountain sickness?
disease in which the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by RBC increases (polycythaemia) and there is an abnormally low level of O2 in the blood
How does phlebotomy affect RBC and Hb concentration
Reduced RBC mass and Hb concentration
Treatments for chronic mountain sickness
move to lower altitude more physical exercise ace inhibitors dopamingeric antagonists Ventilatory stimulants
