What is the pathogenesis of Erysipelothrix?

A
  • Transmission usually by ingestion of contaminated material
  • Also, commensals - tonsils
  • Entry via tonsils or abrasions
  • Depression of host defences, multiplication of virulent strains, and invasion of neutrophils
  1. Acute septicemia - fever, anorexia, DIC, hemorrhage, lymphadenitis
  2. Sub-acute - malaise, fever, DIC
    • epidermal lesions - Diamonds
  3. Chronic - arthritis, endocarditis
