Erosive toothwear Flashcards
1
Q
Define erosive toothwear
A
Irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to chemical process of acids, not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or dental caries
2
Q
Sources of acids
A
Intrinsic
Extrinsic
3
Q
What are the sources of intrinsic acids
A
GORD, chronic vomiting, rumination
4
Q
What are the sources of extrinsic acids
A
- Carbonated drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks
- Acidic foods between meals
- Medications (chewable vit c)
- Sugar containing gum
5
Q
Presentation of erosion
A
- Usually maxillary teeth
- Incisal, palatal and occlusal surfaces most likely affected
- Chamfered ridges/ledges within enamel
- Cusp tips may be cupped or incisal edges grooved with exposed dentine
- Yellowing of teeth
6
Q
Management of erosive toothwear
A
- Identify aetiology / risk factors
- Preventative care
- Monitoring period to ensure risk controlled
- Treatment
7
Q
Tx of erosion in the primary dentition
A
- Asymptomatic = prevention only
- Symptomatic = small areas covered in composite, large areas = strip crowns/PMC
- Extractions if severe
8
Q
Tx of erosion in the mixed dentition
A
Treat permanent teeth conservatively with composite
Prevention
Long term monitoring
